RECOVERY PHOTOS ON MACAh, you’re pictures. They’re precious aren’t they? A cataloger of all your best and most precious moments, easily accessible with the simple click of a button or swipe of a screen–that is, until something happens and your files get deleted.

Losing pictures on your Mac can be not only frustrating, but legitimately upsetting. After all, these are your memories we’re talking about?

The good thing is there is a well-documented and simple process for recovering your mac picture files.

1.) Stop!

Once the file in question is deleted or lost, you need to immediately stop using your hard drive. What many people don’t realize is that when you delete a file you aren’t actually obliterating it from existence so much as telling your computer that the space that file once occupied is now free for the taking. If you’re not careful and if you save or alter another file, your computer may take you up on the offer and overwrite that space. Now, there are ways to recover files that have been overwritten, but this is where things start to get increasingly difficult and tedious and the file you recover may not be the most up-to-date version.

So before you do anything else, stop using the affected disc.

2.) Get Software.

This is a fairly easy step. The only hard part is making a decision. If you Google “recover photos on a Mac” or “Mac photo recovery” you’ll be bombarded with dozens of different programs.

iSolve is one that’s well advertised, but a lot of people have issues with it. Data Recovery Guru is a very simple and effective choice that costs about $100. Yet another option is buying DataRecovery, which is a similarly user-friendly program.

Once you’ve made your choice, download your software. Most recovery programs are downloaded the same way as any other piece of software.

3.) Scan for Files

If you know where your deleted file is located, all the better. If not, simply ask your computer to scan everything. Be warned, this may take some time!

4.) Searching and Previewing

Once your search is complete, you’ll be presented with all of the deleted files currently on your computer. Keep in mind that the names of deleted files are destroyed so that all that’s left is the data. This means that you may have to go through some of the files one-by-one, previewing each in order to make sure it has the data you need.

5.) Recovering your Photos

Alright, so once you’ve scanned and isolated the photos you need, all you have to do is click “recover” and your computer should get to work restoring that file! A helpful hint is to save your recovered file to an external drive. This is so that you don’t disrupt your disc and overwrite any other files you may want to find.

After that you’re done! It wasn’t so bad, was it?
