Time Machine, as a backup tool, can remedy the deficiency of previous Mac OS X on the one hand, and integrated new technology in on the other hand, which solve problems other system or backup software can’t solve. In addition, it has a pretty cool interface and is broadly-known. It embarks shiningly.
Working mechanism of Time Machine is as follows:
After starting the Time Machine for the first time, this software will clone the overall disk. After that, Time Machine will communicate with FSEvents (file system event) of Mac OS X system on whether there is any change in the system each half an hour. FSEvents process will keep on tracking all changes of system. When change of the past one hour is found, Time Machine will backup those changes. After this, the machine will clear backup of the last day automatically each day and clear backup of the last week each week. Thus, it keeps a complete system backup and at the same time save backup space.
Based on information provided by FSEvents, Time Machine will make backup for documents with certain change, which itself is an incremental backup. It will also make a hard link to documents not changed. From the view of documents system, a document in the disk is nothing more than a pile of data. With hard link, documents catalogue will connect these content to catalogue. If this hard link is deleted, users can’t find the document, even though document is still stored in the disk well at this moment. In Mac OS X, using Empty Trash function of Finder to delete document is delete hard link of documents. Expect for using recovery software, documents deleted in this way can be recovered as long as they haven’t been covered in the disk.
In ordinary document system and disk format, one document has only one hard link. Apple modified the format for this new function and enables one document to have multiple hard links. Hard link is actually pointer. Storage of pointer saves more time and space than document backup. In addition, because of the existing of pointer, you can recall all system documents of the system at certain time.
