recover lost word document on macbookWord document recovery for Mac is not as painstaking a process as one might imagine. Basically, the steps as to how to recover lost Word files on Mac involve two methods; a step-by-step manual recovery or the use of one of many available Mac Data Recovery software. uFlysoft, Stellar Phoenix, iSkysoft, are a few such data recovery software. However, the following are the steps for manual Word document recovery for Mac:

  1. In the upper left corner of the Word document, click on the Word application icon and then select “Preferences” from the drop-down menu.
2. From the “Word Preferences” dialog box, choose “File Locations.”
3. Select “AutoRecover Files” from the File Locations dialog box and then click “Modify.” A list of auto-recovered files will appear.
4. From the AutoRecover Files list, choose the file that was lost by typing its name in the Spotlight tool or dragging the file to your desktop or into a new Word document.

Another manual method for Word document recovery is by performing the following short steps:

  • Hold down both the “N” key and the “Command” key at the same time to open a new “Finder” window.
• Under “Devices”, select the computer as the location search. This will ensure that the entire computer will be searched for the lost file in question.
• Type the words “AutoRecovery” in the search field.
• Select the lost file from the list that appears and double-click to open. Select “Save As” from the File menu to resave the file with a new name that is not preceded by “AutoRecovery Save Of.”

There is always that feeling of elation when an important Word document is recovered. Therefore, to take care of future incidents of lost files, these are the proactive steps to follow:

  1. Select “Preferences” from the Word application drop-down menu.
2. Select “File Locations” from the Word Preferences dialog box.
3. When the “AutoRecover Files” dialog box appears, click “Modify.”
4. A dialog box titled “Choose the location of AutoRecover files” will appear. Simply choose a location.
5. At the bottom left corner of the “Choose the location of AutoRecover files” dialog box is a button titled “New Folder.” Click on this button and in the “Name of New Folder” dialog box, type in the words “Recover Files” then click on the “Create” button.
6. The folder called “Recover Files” will now appear in the “Choose the location of AutoRecover files” dialog box. Double click on this folder.
7. The “File Locations” dialog box will now open with the “Recover Files” folder and will contain all recovered files that were created from that point forward.

It might be useful to know that the Word application on a Mac computer has an AutoRecovery feature that can be adjusted. This feature automatically saves a Word document every ten minutes. However, if ten minutes is too long a span for you, this time can be changed by selecting “Preferences” from the Word menu and then increasing or decreasing the time in AutoRecover.
